John 2:1-11
This, the first of Jesus’ many miracles, seems somewhat frivolous. It sure would be nice to have a friend who is able to turn water into wine. But I don’t think that was His main reason for being here. So, why does Jesus do it? And why does His mother know that He will do it? With, it seems, a small bit of annoyance Jesus questions why Mary is getting Him involved in this.
Mary tells the servants to do whatever Jesus asks. And Jesus willingly goes along. Not only does Jesus produce wine, He produces the best wine. He tells Mary that His time has not yet come. The time for His miracles has not yet arrived. But, He demonstrates for His disciples the power of what He can do.
So, why was Jesus sent to live among us? One of the reasons, it could be argued, was to be with the people. And, in being with the people, one of the many things He teaches them is balance.
Jesus valued weddings and festivities, because they involved people, and Jesus came to be with people. Our mission can often be accomplished in joyous times of celebration with others. Bring balance to your life by bringing Jesus into times of pleasure as well as times of work.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, we are so blessed by the many things you sent your Son to teach us. And we know that He is always with us, both in times of joy and in times of sorrow.
PROMPT: Where am I needing better balance in my life? Where might God be inviting me to find more joy?
