Luke 7:36-50

In this passage, it is pretty evident Simon didn’t invite Jesus into his home because he was interested in learning a better way to love and live in the world.

Let’s face it. Simon wanted to have dinner with Jesus because he had heard great things about him. And he probably thought hanging out with Jesus would help improve his own image. In modern terms, Simon was all charged up to flood the internet with social media posts about this gathering to garner an impressive number of “likes.”

He was certain everyone would be impressed he had Jesus over for dinner. But then some woman, you know that woman, arrived at Jesus’ feet.

The photo-op now put on hold, Simon was left trying to figure out how Jesus could possibly acknowledge such a low-life person. How could Jesus be a prophet yet not recognize this woman would certainly ruin his reputation if he continued this relationship with her?

Because God loves each of us undeniably.

Because God’s love is unconditional.

No matter what.

That's how.

This is Jesus’ prophecy during this tableside gathering. That no matter who we are, both in image and reality, at the end of the day we are all sinners. And the freedom rooted in God’s love allows Jesus to love each one of us, in spite of us all.

And for our part?

Well, we just need to have faith.

Faith like that of the woman in this passage.

Faith enough to own up to bad behavior and ask for help.

Faith to know redemption comes from weeping at Jesus’ feet.

Faith to accept no matter how despicable our actions may be, Jesus will always love us.

Even if others may not understand it.

Even when others may think we don’t deserve it.

Have faith enough to know God’s love will never fail.

This is a gift for this Christmas season.

And with our faith in the Baby Jesus, we can unwrap the legacy of God’s undeniable and unending love.

So, while Simon was hoping for a press-worthy event to uphold his shiny Pharisee image, Jesus blew up the moment simply by choosing to love.

Because God’s compassion overcomes all prejudice and surmounts all barriers.

And because God’s love extends to all.

Whether we’re more like Simon, or more like that woman. No matter with whom or how we identify, Jesus isn’t worried about tarnishing his reputation. He just holds space for each of us to be accepted and loved.

Have faith enough to unwrap this gift for others.

Invite the unwanted.

Love the unloved.

Act in the world motivated by the ways of Jesus.

Hold on to faith enough to love others beyond fear’s measure.

And witness the power of God’s transformative love.

PRAYER: Loving God, thank you for showing us the greatest gift of all this season and always. We pray for courage to weep at your feet when we are weak and in need of healing and strength to love others in without condition just as you have always loved us. Be with us and guide us as we share the gift of your compassion and mercy so those with whom we share your story will experience the extravagance of your love. Amen.

PROMPT: Where might I be ready to own up to bad behavior and ask for God’s grace? Where might I unwrap this gift for someone else - to extend God’s love to another?
